Darts Enters a New Era: Target Darts Unveils Ambitious Plan to Gamify and Connect the World
LONDON, UK – Darts, a sport steeped in tradition and pub culture, is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by an unprecedented surge in global popularity and the strategic vision of industry leader Target Darts. Leveraging the "Luke Littler effect"—the meteoric rise of the teenage prodigy—Target Darts is pioneering a revolution aimed at gamifying the sport, connecting players worldwide, and ushering in an era of unprecedented accessibility and engagement. From sinking virtual ships to blasting alien invaders, the future of darts, as envisioned by Target Darts, is a vibrant, digitally integrated experience designed for everyone, from casual enthusiasts to aspiring professionals.
The company’s groundbreaking initiatives, including the OMNI smart dartboard system, the interactive Target Live platform, and the innovative Target Arcade gaming suite, are set to redefine how millions experience the sport. This ambitious overhaul aims to transcend traditional boundaries, attracting new demographics and fostering a global community united by the thrill of the throw.
The "Littler Effect": A Catalyst for Change
The seismic shift in darts’ public perception and demographic appeal can be traced directly to the emergence of Luke Littler. "When Luke Littler burst onto the scene for the first time, back end of 2023/start of 2024, the age demographic of darts dropped very rapidly," explains Ollie Howard, a prominent member of the Bullhitters, a group of darts influencers who have witnessed this transformation firsthand. The Bullhitters themselves are a testament to the sport’s burgeoning online presence, having amassed over half a million followers and bypassed 600 million views across their platforms in just two years. This explosion in engagement underscores the immediate and profound impact of Littler’s arrival.
Littler, affectionately known as "The Nuke," captivated audiences with his exceptional talent and youthful exuberance. His remarkable journey to the final of the PDC World Darts Championship in late 2023, followed by subsequent triumphs, including becoming the youngest-ever double champion at just 18 years old, catapulted him to global stardom. His fresh face and undeniable skill shattered preconceived notions about the sport, making darts cool and aspirational for a younger generation. This newfound visibility extended far beyond traditional sports viewership, permeating social media and mainstream culture.
A Sport’s Accelerated Growth Point
James Tattersall, CEO at Target Darts, articulates the magnitude of this moment. "We are at the centre of one of the most exciting growth stories in sports," he states with conviction. "Luke’s rise has changed the perspective of what darts is. Every sport in its history experiences growth points when that growth really accelerates. Football experienced it, golf experienced it, Formula One experienced it. Luke Littler created that moment in history, which means that darts is experiencing it right now."
Tattersall emphasizes that this is more than just a fleeting boost in viewership; it’s a foundational shift. "Target now has the opportunity to go beyond what darts has already achieved and build what comes next." The company sees itself not merely as a manufacturer but as an architect of the sport’s future, tasked with harnessing this momentum and directing it towards sustainable, inclusive growth.
Target Darts: Modernizing a Century-Old Tradition
For decades, darts, despite its loyal following, often struggled with an image perceived by some as niche or outdated. "10 years ago, darts was often seen as a sport with a passionate but relatively niche following," Tattersall reflects. However, the landscape has dramatically altered. "Today darts is more popular, it’s more global, and attracting a broader audience than ever before."
The numbers speak volumes. The 2025-26 World Darts Championship generated an astounding 51.2 million viewer hours on Sky Sports alone, setting a new record as the highest-ever non-football audience in Sky Sports history. This unprecedented viewership is complemented by significant financial growth, with the World Championship Prize Fund escalating from £1 million in 2010 to a staggering £5 million in 2026. These figures are not just statistics; they are indicators of a sport on the cusp of a global breakthrough.

Target Darts’ ambition extends far beyond the professional circuit. The company is committed to serving the needs of every individual who engages with a dartboard, from competitive players to casual newcomers. "We want darts to become a sport that anybody can play anywhere against anyone and at any level, with a consistent, considered, connected experience that follows them throughout their journey," Tattersall affirms. This holistic vision aims to democratize darts, removing barriers to entry and making it as accessible as possible.
The OMNI System: The Digital Backbone of Connected Darts
At the heart of Target Darts’ connected ecosystem is the OMNI system. This innovative automatic scoring and lighting system represents a significant leap forward, transforming any traditional dartboard into a smart, connected device capable of supporting live competition and sophisticated data tracking.
The OMNI system integrates four built-in HD cameras that precisely track every dart thrown, instantly calculate scores, and transmit this data seamlessly to a dedicated app. This not only eliminates the need for manual scoring – a common point of contention and inaccuracy for casual players – but also opens up a world of analytical possibilities. Players can monitor their progress, identify areas for improvement, and engage with performance metrics previously reserved for professionals.
Crucially, the OMNI system links directly to the DartCounter website, which has rapidly grown into the largest digital darts community globally, boasting over one million monthly active users. This integration allows OMNI users to tap into a vast network of players, facilitating online matches and community interaction on an unprecedented scale.
Tattersall paints a vivid picture of this connected future: "Imagine a world where an aspiring player picks up a dart for the first time. They learn through data-powered coaching and interactive games. They join a digital community with millions of players around the world. They test their skills against the world’s best players. They walk into a local venue, and their profile, statistics, and achievements follow them automatically."
He continues, envisioning a long-term trajectory: "A decade later, they qualify for a major tournament, and every throw, every training session and every milestone along that journey has been captured, supported and enhanced by technology. Today, that sounds ambitious, but 10 years from now, it will feel completely normal, because the future of darts is not simply more tournaments, bigger prize funds, or larger audiences. The future of darts is a connected sport." This vision underscores the company’s commitment to building a comprehensive, data-driven pathway for players of all levels.
Target Live: Bridging the Pro-Fan Divide
One of Target Darts’ most revolutionary offerings is Target Live, a platform designed to make the seemingly impossible a reality: playing darts with professional players like Luke Littler from anywhere in the world. Building on the success of DartCounter’s online match play, which has already offered fans opportunities to compete against pros, Target Live will elevate this interaction to an entirely new level.
Target Live promises a unique format for darts entertainment, featuring regular live sessions with professional players, celebrities, coaches, and influential darts personalities. Fans and players equipped with an OMNI system will be able to join these interactive experiences, compete alongside their favourite stars, and participate in live moments that foster an unparalleled sense of connection to the sport’s biggest names. The key differentiator is its authenticity: unlike simulations or video games, every dart thrown in Target Live is real, thrown on a physical dartboard.

Tattersall highlights the exclusivity of this experience: "No sport gives fans the ability to compete directly against the greatest player in the world at their craft. You can watch Lionel Messi, you can buy his shirts, but you can’t play against him in five aside. That opportunity doesn’t exist. But with Target Live, it does."
He elaborates on the possibilities: "Target Live creates the opportunities for players to compete against Luke Littler in a one-leg slam… or compete on a global leaderboard for the fastest around-the-clock score. Not a simulation, it’s not a game, it’s a real match in real time with pro players, with influencers, with celebrities on the other side of that dart board. We’re enabling anyone with an OMNI not just to watch darts, but to be a part of it." This direct, real-time engagement promises to be a game-changer for fan interaction in sports.
Zoe Burton, Chief Transformation Officer at Target Darts, provides further insights into the platform’s potential applications. She cites the example of a "coaching throw-along," likening it to a Peloton fitness class. "It will actually be a professional player who is teaching and driving a routine that you can play along with, and you can see how you’re performing. I think that will really change the way that people try to interact with practising and training." This innovative approach to coaching could democratize elite training, making it accessible to a global audience.
Burton also describes an entertainment-focused format: "The other is more of an entertainment format, bringing together – and this is an example of what we’re planning on doing – a podcast or chat show with different darts challenges. Imagine you have a pro player, a host and a couple of celebrities. You might have a bit of a general chit chat… but then actually allowing those players to play online versus people." This blend of casual entertainment and competitive play is designed to attract a broader audience and offer diverse forms of engagement.
Target Arcade: Gamifying the Oche
Alongside Target Live, the company is launching Target Arcade, a dedicated gaming platform meticulously designed for connected play. Slated for launch on October 29, 2026, Target Arcade will debut with seven distinct games, ranging from the lava-avoiding challenge of Board is Lava to the naval combat of Battlesplash. The platform promises continuous innovation, with a new title added every month thereafter.
Target Arcade is strategically designed to cater to a diverse player base. Some games are crafted for pure, unadulterated fun, bringing families and friends together around the dartboard in a light-hearted, engaging manner. Others are built with serious players in mind, offering innovative ways to sharpen skills, improve accuracy, and develop strategic thinking through gamified training modules.
The experience is enhanced by a dedicated screen positioned adjacent to the dartboard, allowing players to interact with the gaming elements in real-time as they throw darts. "Target Arcade uses 3D rendered games," Burton explains, "and built in is the level of graphics that you would typically see on a gaming platform. There are real opportunities to change the way that people are playing and get more people involved."
A key innovation lies in how darts are integrated as a controller within these games. "It’s providing a different layer in terms of a traditional darts game, where you’re just throwing the darts. There’s using darts as a controller – so in Battlesplash, that’s actually using the darts to find a ship, to hit a duck. Alien Invasion also uses darts as a controller, as well as a tablet. So it’s not just a parent who can play; they can also get their children involved. My son can help kill those aliens as well by hitting on the iPad." This intuitive, multi-modal control scheme makes the games accessible to a wider age range and encourages collaborative play, further broadening darts’ appeal.

"If we want to grow participation, we have to create experiences that appeal beyond traditional dart players," Tattersall reiterates, emphasizing the strategic importance of Target Arcade in reaching new audiences and diversifying the appeal of darts.
Global Ambitions and the Future of Talent Discovery
Target Darts’ ambitious roadmap extends beyond technological innovation to encompass significant global expansion and talent nurturing. Tattersall outlines the company’s long-term objectives: tripling global participation in the sport, connecting millions of players through the OMNI system, and establishing dedicated darts venues in major markets worldwide. These goals underscore a vision of darts as a truly global, mainstream sport.
The "Luke Littler effect" serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for undiscovered talent across the globe. "Somewhere in the world tonight, someone will pick up a dart for the very first time. Our job is to make sure that wherever that journey takes them, the sport is ready," Tattersall reflects.
Through the OMNI system, Target Darts is now capable of scaling its Elite 1 training programme, making high-quality coaching and development resources accessible "to the four corners of the world." This initiative aims to democratize the pathway to professional darts, breaking down geographical barriers that have historically limited talent discovery.
"What if the next superstar of darts is sitting there undiscovered in the United States, India or South Korea?" Tattersall ponders. "Because the future of darts won’t be built by finding the next Luke Littler. It will be built by creating thousands of opportunities for future Luke Littlers to emerge across the world." This forward-looking perspective positions Target Darts not just as a technology provider, but as a vital incubator for the next generation of darts champions, ensuring a sustainable and vibrant future for the sport on a truly global scale.
The transformation spearheaded by Target Darts marks a pivotal moment for a sport rich in history. By embracing cutting-edge technology, fostering unprecedented connectivity, and innovating with gamified experiences, darts is poised to shed its traditional image and establish itself as a dynamic, inclusive, and globally relevant athletic pursuit for the 21st century.
