These movies and shows feel made for VR, and you won’t find them on Netflix

When my mom, who is a bit reluctant to use new technology, asked me if there was a better use case for my beautiful Vision Pro beyond playing games, I told her she could watch a movie on it and get a magical experience. She went ahead and watched some random clips, only to realize that it is not the case for every show or video. That is why I was compelled to put together a list of movies and shows that actually feel made for VR.

Watching movies in VR is not only about putting a giant screen in front of your face. The best content either gives you real depth, puts you inside the scene, or uses the headset in a way a normal TV cannot.

My favorite so far is Submerged, which is available in the Apple TV app on Vision Pro. It is a good watch if you like immersive thrillers, and it does a better job than most clips at showing why a headset can make video feel different.

If you are planning to buy a headset mainly to watch movies, remember that there are three kinds of content worth looking at: proper VR films, 180-degree or 360-degree immersive videos, and 3D movies that look better in a headset than they do on most home TVs.

Meta Quest is still the easiest headset for VR films and YouTube VR, while Apple Vision Pro has the strongest premium 3D and Apple Immersive Video library.

Submerged is the best place to start on Apple Vision Pro

Submerged is the first scripted film shot in Apple Immersive Video. It puts you inside a WWII submarine under attack, and the cramped set works well for the format because people, sparks, steam, water and metal walls are all close to you.

It is not a long feature film, but it is one of the clearest examples of why immersive video can work for narrative storytelling. The camera does not need to move much because the tension comes from being trapped inside the space with the crew.

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is still one of VR’s best documentaries

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is one of the easiest recommendations for anyone new to VR video. It was filmed aboard the International Space Station and follows astronauts living and working in orbit.

In this movie, you are inside the station, close to the astronauts, with Earth visible through the windows. It is slow, calm, and far more memorable in a headset than on a normal screen.

Madrid Noir is one of the best VR mystery films

Madrid Noir is a stylish animated VR mystery set in 1930s Madrid. It is not trying to be a game with complex controls. Rather, it works more like an immersive stage play, with light interaction, strong art direction, and a film-noir atmosphere.

The best part is the way the city appears around you. Instead of simply watching a detective story, you stand inside the memory of one.

Gloomy Eyes is perfect if you want VR animation

Gloomy Eyes is one of the most visually charming VR animated films. It has a dark fairy-tale look, a zombie boy, a human girl, and a world where the sun has disappeared.

The film works because VR gives the diorama-style world depth, which means you are looking into a small animated world that feels handmade.

Wolves in the Walls feels like a real VR story, not a tech demo

Wolves in the Walls is based on the Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean story, and it remains one of the better examples of interactive VR storytelling. You follow Lucy, a child who believes wolves are living inside the walls of her house.

The experience works because Lucy reacts to you. She looks at you, talks to you, and pulls you into the story. Really, and I’m not kidding. Just take a look at the below clip posted by Meta Quest on YouTube:

The Line is short, simple and easy to recommend

The Line is a short interactive VR story set inside a miniature version of 1940s São Paulo. It follows two miniature dolls, Pedro and Rosa, and uses hand interaction without overwhelming you.

This is a good first VR film for someone who does not play games. It is gentle, readable, and short enough that you can finish it before headset fatigue kicks in.

Notes on Blindness VR is one of the most powerful VR documentaries

Notes on Blindness VR is based on the audio diaries of John Hull, who documented his experience of losing sight. The VR version uses sound, space, abstract visuals, and interaction to show how perception changes without relying on normal sight.

It is not flashy. It is quiet, thoughtful, and still one of the strongest examples of VR being used for something other than spectacle.

Pick Why it works in VR Watch when
Notes on Blindness VR Uses binaural audio and abstract visuals You want something emotional
Traveling While Black Places you inside a real historical space You want documentary storytelling
Space Explorers Real footage from the ISS You want the “wow†factor

Traveling While Black is a must-watch VR documentary

Traveling While Black places you inside Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C., while people share stories connected to race, travel, safety, and the Green Book era. The setting matters because VR lets you sit in the room instead of observing the interviews from a distance.

These movies and shows feel made for VR, and you won’t find them on Netflix

This documentary shows how VR can make documentary interviews feel more immediate without turning them into a gimmick.

Invasion! is the easiest family VR film to try

If you have read this article so far, you’d realised that I like to spend time with my mom, and show her the best of technology. If you want to have a family time, then Invasion! is your best choice.

It is a short animated 360-degree film from Baobab Studios. It is light, funny, and easy to show to someone who has never used VR before. Ethan Hawke narrates, the aliens are goofy, and the rabbit steals the show.

The full 360 version is also available on YouTube, which makes it one of the easiest VR shorts to try without buying anything.

Crow: The Legend is a beautiful VR short with music and interaction

Crow: The Legend is another Baobab VR story, this time inspired by a Native American legend. It has a strong voice cast, music from John Legend, and a bright animated world built for 360-degree viewing.

It is more polished than most early VR animation, and the story is easy to follow even if you are not used to interactive films.

Namoo is short, quiet and worth watching for the art style

Namoo means “tree†in Korean, and the short is built like a visual poem about life, memory, growth, loss, and art. It is not the kind of VR film you watch for action. You watch it for the way the world forms around you.

The scale and movement are gentle, which also makes it easier to watch than many intense VR videos.

Apple Immersive Video is the best premium VR cinema format right now

Apple Vision Pro has the strongest premium video catalog because Apple is investing in 180-degree 3D 8K video with Spatial Audio. The format is limited to Vision Pro, but the quality is far above most random 360-degree videos online.

Apple Immersive pick Genre Why watch it
Submerged Scripted thriller Best proof that immersive fiction can work
Prehistoric Planet Immersive Nature / dinosaurs Great scale and creature presence
Wild Life Nature documentary Animal encounters feel close without being chaotic
Adventure Sports / outdoor Good for heights, climbing, parkour and physical scale
Boundless Travel Works well as a calm demo for guests
Alicia Keys: Rehearsal Room Music Feels like a private studio session
The Weeknd: Open Hearts Music video More stylized and cinematic than a normal concert clip
Concert for One Music series Designed around close, intimate performance

Alicia Keys: Rehearsal Room is still one of the best short demos for music in VR. It puts you close to the performer and the band, which suits the headset much better.

The Weeknd: Open Hearts is a more cinematic take on immersive music. It is made for Apple Vision Pro and uses the headset more like a moving 3D music-video space than a normal live recording.

Best 3D movies to watch in VR

3D movies are still one of the best reasons to use a headset for normal entertainment. Apple Vision Pro is the strongest option here because Apple TV and Disney+ both support 3D movies on the headset.

Meta Quest can also be used as a big-screen cinema, but the 3D catalog depends more on apps, local files, and regional support.

Movie Best headset/app Why it works in VR
Avatar: The Way of Water Disney+ / Apple Vision Pro One of the best home 3D showcases
Avatar Disney+ / Apple Vision Pro Still one of the cleanest 3D fantasy worlds
Avengers: Endgame Disney+ / Apple Vision Pro Large-scale action benefits from headset cinema
Star Wars: The Force Awakens Disney+ / Apple Vision Pro Space, ships and lightsabers work well in 3D
Encanto Disney+ / Apple Vision Pro Colorful animation looks great on a giant virtual screen
Gravity Apple TV 3D library, where available Space and depth make the headset feel useful
Dune / Dune: Part Two Apple TV 3D library, where available Scale, sandworms and landscapes benefit from a huge screen

For most people, Avatar: The Way of Water is the cleanest 3D movie demo. It has bright scenes, water, flying, depth, scale, and enough visual polish to justify wearing a headset for a full movie.

Best apps for watching movies and shows in VR

Best YouTube VR and 360 videos to try

YouTube VR is messy, but it still has some of the easiest free content for testing a headset. The best results usually come from searching for “VR180 3D,†“8K VR180,†or official 360-degree films instead of random 360 uploads.

Start with fully produced 360 animation like Invasion! or Crow: The Legend, then move to travel, space, music, and behind-the-scenes clips. VR180 is usually better than 360 for quality because the pixels are focused in front of you instead of being spread around the entire sphere.

What to avoid when watching movies in VR

Low-resolution 360 videos can look worse than a normal YouTube video on your phone. Many older 360 clips were shot for phones, not modern headsets, so they look soft, blurry, or stretched when blown up inside Quest 3 or Vision Pro.

Long movies can also get uncomfortable if the headset is not balanced properly. A better head strap matters on Quest, while Vision Pro is easier for short premium experiences than long binge sessions unless you are comfortable with the fit.

Fast-moving 360 videos can also cause motion sickness. Roller coasters, drone shots, skiing clips, and shaky handheld 360 videos look exciting in thumbnails, but they are often rough inside a headset.

Quick recommendations by headset

Headset Start with Best second pick
Meta Quest 3 / 3S Space Explorers: The ISS Experience Madrid Noir or Wolves in the Walls
Apple Vision Pro Submerged Avatar: The Way of Water in 3D
PC VR Gloomy Eyes Madrid Noir or The Line
First-time VR demo Invasion! Space Explorers
Documentary fans Notes on Blindness VR Traveling While Black
Music fans Alicia Keys: Rehearsal Room The Weeknd: Open Hearts

The safest first recommendation is Space Explorers: The ISS Experience on Quest or Submerged on Vision Pro. One shows real astronauts in orbit, and the other shows how a scripted film can use immersive video without feeling like a gimmick.

For pure 3D movie watching, start with Avatar: The Way of Water or another big Disney+ 3D title on Vision Pro. For free YouTube-style viewing, start with Baobab’s 360 animated shorts before going down the 360 travel-video rabbit hole.
